NAS and PC updates

The plan for the evening was to update the software on the Synology NAS and the PCs in the office. The NAS update went smoothly.  The PC updates were not as smooth. Updates included Firefox, Chrome, and Windows.

The PC next to the outside door updated smoothly.

NAT’s PC wouldn’t update. I removed files from the SoftwareDistribution folder per Microsoft support notes and was able to then install the updates (20+). Firefox was very out of date and was updated.

Chicky’s PC was found to have a browser pluggin infection. The search engine and home page had been changed. I reset Chrome to the initial defaults and removed the pluggins. This PC also wouldn’t do updates. The same fix that was done on Nat’s PC worked here too. About 18 Windows updates were installed. Firefox was very out of date and was updated.

The PC next to the stairwell door also won’t update. The logs show that this is due to corrupt update files. I have been unable to find a way to fix the issue. Some updates are able to be downloaded and installed as standalone installs but not all of them. This isn’t a good long term solution. One Microsoft support note says that the only fix is to re-install the operating system. If it turns out that this is the only way to fix things, it may make sense to use this as a test case to upgrade to Win 10. I recommend that this PC not be used for Internet access. It should be OK to use for accessing the databases and general use, just don’t use web browsers at all. I will continue to research possible fixes. If I can’t find a fix, the only solution will be upgrading to Win 10. The Win 10 software costs about $118.
