WVWD Plant Laptop – Reinstall Carbonite and Kaspersky

In Nov 2017 the laptop had the OS re-installed due to virus/malware. This work was done by WVWD staff. During this process, Carbonite and Kaspersky where removed.

Installed Carbonite and Kaspersky. Determined that Windows Update will not run. Gets error 800B0110. Research leads me to believe that the problem is SSL based and that the Windows Update client can not verify the identify of the Microsoft Update servers. The laptop has a fresh Windows 8 install (not 8.1) which dates from 2012. I tried updating to 8.1 via the Win 8 Store but it requires Win 8 updates to be run first.

Tried a couple of repairs:

DISM /online /cleanup-image /scanhealth

I believe I’ve seen this issue before and that I need to manually install some sort of update to provide the current SSL certificate information. I’ve opened a support request at Microsoft in hopes that someone will have an answer.

When I left, the laptop was in the process of doing it’s initial Carbonite backup. This will take a few days due to the slow DSL upload speed at the plant.

Laptop info:

Samsung NP350E7C
Workgroup “WORKGROUP”
Name: WARNER
Win 8 ; 8GB ; Core i7 ; 906G HD

If I find a solution for the Windows Update problem, I’ll contact Chuck and arrange another visit. Until then, I strongly recommend that the laptop only be used for office related work and do not use it for general Internet surfing. With the system missing 6 years of security updates, it’s going to be susceptible to infection even with the antivirus software running. Something to consider is that Microsoft is still offering a free Windows 10 Upgrade until this Tuesday, 1/16/18 for anyone that uses assistive technologies such as the magnifier, high contrast or narrator. I know I use at least the magnifier occasionally. The link is below. Personally, I’d go ahead and give it a try (but on a high speed WiFi connection). If you’d like me to do the upgrade, let me know and I’ll bring the laptop home to my office.
